Title: Changing hoses
Post by: SV Hope on January 09, 2013, 04:18:40 AM
As a rank amateur when it comes to mechanical things on my P365, I would like some guidance on two relatively '' simple '' tasks that I need to tackle on my boat.
1. The fuel hose that runs to the mechanical lift pump is frayed. There is no shut off valve on the fuel tank. The fuel run is as follows. From the tank > primary filter > electric pump> lift pump on engine . Should I clamp the small length of hose between the primary filter & the electric pump, to prevent excess fuel spewing out when the suspect hose is removed? Is it better to drain the primary filter of all fuel instead? Would I need to bleed the entire system on the completion of this task?
2. One of the two oil hoses that runs from the base which supports the oil filter to the oil cooler is weeping oil. This has caused the oil level in the engine to drop off noticeably. When I remove the faulty hose, will I be confronted with large quantities of oil escaping from the opening? Should I drain all the engine oil first?

Thanks in advance

Michael

Hello and welcome,

Our 365 has a petcock cut off on the fuel line.  It is obscure but is mounted on the bulkhead just before the fuel line enters the first filter.  Make sure that you don't already have one.  Otherwise you may want to consider installing one.  If your filter is below the tank, and you don't close the petcock then you will get siphoning.  If above you will not but you will get air in the line once you crack it, again unless you close the petcock.  Once air is in the system you will need to bleed it at least to the engine mounted filter and maybe all the way to the injectors.  PITA but once you have done it a few times you get the hang of it.

On the oil lines I would go ahead and change both of them at the same time.  As I recall there are two different lengths available so be careful to measure once you get them out.  Just go ahead and drain the oil and change it at the same time is my policy.

Good luck
