Title: Rudder Packing Gland
Post by: Leo on December 23, 2012, 10:53:32 AM
While replacing the fuel tank I found that the rudder was leaking a bit. I'll try to tighten it next trip. I assume it works the same as the prop shaft.
Any one know what size the packing is on the cutter?

Thanks,  I did it and did not drown.  Actually very little water came in at all.  Yoga would have been useful.  Either that or a very small and flexible crew member  :D

I did use quarter inch telfon.  I may could have used 3/8.  Never did find out what was actually spec'd.  The quarter inch went in a bit too easily for my taste.  Anyway, it's done for now.  The hardest part was cracking open the stuffing box and cleaning out the old flax which had deteriorated to cottage cheese consistency.  PB Blaster and a 14 inch pipe wrench finally worked on the nut.  I did leave a bit of DNA and skin back there.

Ron,

It is not so bad so to speak when you are back in there, it is the part when you are trying to get back out that everything goes bad.  That is when you discover what went to sleep and what body part is positioned in a do not disturb mode.  I have also noticed once you start sweating and everything becomes slimy, it only makes it worse to get out.  Once out of course, the first few minutes is no picnic either.  I wonder what it is like to work on a 100 footer?  Do they have the same problems with access?

I have a buddy that was on a tug in the navy.  He was the smallest of the crew so he was the guy they sent inside the engine for inspection and repairs.

Good Sailing

Dale

I'm 6'3". I love my 365, but access to everything aft of the aft bulkhead is a nightmare. Over the years, I have learned it is much easier to patiently take the time to dismantle/remove parts & panels for easier access. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would pass on the 365. The older I get, the more difficult it becomes.
