Title: injection pump timing
Post by: sailn on December 19, 2012, 08:49:29 PM
I am about to install a new injector pump on my Universal 5444, and was wondering about the timing. Do you just install the same shims as were removed, or do you retime the pump? Is there a way to know the moment of injection without the fuel being hooked up ( the engine is in the basement ), or is this something to do when I am ready to test start the engine?
Thanks for any help.

The new pump did require retiming. It required to less shims than the old pump. Each shim is 6/1000 of an inch, and I was wondering about the affects of the sealant after timing. You time, take apart, put sealant on the shims and pump, and reinstall. I found that I had to remove another shim, because of the thin film between the shims. Looking at the thickness of the shim, and the difference that just one makes, it made sense that the timing retarded just a little, when something was put between them.
