Title: Fuel pump
Post by: Leo on October 22, 2012, 07:26:38 PM
I'm thinking about adding an electric fuel pump. I have been told it will make bleeding the system easier and can replace the mechanical pump if it fails.
My question is where should I place it? At the fuel tank? Or?

Thanks.

Leo, I mounted mine on the top of the fuel tank to a piece of teak 5200 in place with the switching valves and a on off switch in the engine compartment.Hope this helps. Allen

A much simplier solution is to install a rubber fuel primer bulb near the fuel tank. I think one costs about $10. No wiring. Nothing to break. Simple.

Thanks Allen, That seems like a good location. What pump did you install? I read somewhere that they recommended placing it between the primary filter and the secondary fuel filters. No reason was given so I thought I would ask around.
And Randy, the bulb would work for bleeding but not as a replacement for the mechanical pump.

Thanks!

I mounted a simple 12 volt fuel pump on the bulkhead below my primary racor fuel filter.  It is plumbed from a y-valve after the primary filter to a t-fitting before the mechanical fuel lift pump on the engine.  To use it, I turn the y-valve and turn on the pump.  It can be used for bleeding or to replace the mechanical lift pump.  The racor filter protects the fuel pump from any impurities.

Len,sorry it took so long to get back to you,I searched my files for a receipt and looked at the pump on the boat and can't find the brand. The pump came from NAPA twelve volt about six psi in line.I know that's not much if I find more I will let you know. Allen

hi
I would place the pump as near to the tank as possable ,only reason if you get a leak it will leak fuel and be easy to spot,if it is at the engine end it places the pipe system under vacuum sucking in air a lot harder to find

First, Thanks for all the input. I found a section in the book; Off Shore Sailing,
200 Essential Passage Making Tips. Tip #130 recommends an Airtex E80125 automotive type pump to be installed between the primary and secondary filters.
