Title: Locker latch
Post by: RockysMate on September 23, 2012, 08:51:58 AM
Replacing or modifying the locker latches behind the settees and the end of the galley counter is now very high on my list.  Our last sail was in April, and we were trying to see how fast he would go.  At approximately 8 knots the lockers came flying open and everything in them was dumped in the floor.  Somewhere I saw a picture of a simple latch made of wood that could not come open.  Thanks in advance for any help, this is a great group.  Rocky's been in the boatyard having a hard dodger made and getting the bottom done.  Hopefully he'll be in the water soon and Ralph says he will post some photos.

POG uses shock cord straps which are attached through holes drilled below the locker flaps, secured with stop knots on the inside and strap to small cord hooks above the openings. Removable, not very noticeable when in place and a necessity in a seaway.

We just got our boat and it came with hook and eyes on the settees.  They kinda suck so... would welcome other solutions.  Would love to see a pic of the shock cord arrangement.  Cant quite visualize that.

The stock latches aren't too bad, but they need a shield behind them so that the stuff in the locker can't fall on them and unlatch the door. The shield could be bent from aluminum sheet, like roof flashing. Might be easier than changing latches...
