Title: Pearson 365 Ketch - recommended diameter for destroyer wheel
Post by: stwagstaff on June 13, 2012, 06:11:21 PM
My Pearson 365 has a destroyer wheel that's just too big and I'm searching for a smaller used one.  At 40-inches diameter, the one I have almost touches the edges of the cockpit seats and it's impossible to get around it to work the controls around the cockpit without climbing over the hatches.

What's on your boat and are you happy with it?

My boat came with a 28" wheel that was just too small.  Even though I have long arms, I could not helm while sitting on the cockpit cap and leaning back on the lifelines.  I could steer with my foot, but to hand steer I had to lean in.  After a while my back would complain.

Because my 28" was teak rimmed, I was hesitant to change.  I began searching for a used 32" to 34" wheel as I felt that would be the best size.  Like you said, too big and you can't get around it.  I acquired a 32" leather wrapped wheel which was much much better. I can hand steer comfortably from the lifelines, and I like the feel of the leather vrs a plain Jane stainless.  Actually I think they call it elk hide, as it is soft somewhat like swede.  A 34" would be better but I believe the access issues begin to come into play.

I recently acquired a 32" teak rimed wheel that had been dropped and cracked.  I am in the process of completing the repair so I will have my teak back.  Nothing like a teak wheel.  Looks great, doesn't get hot in the sun like a stainless wheel does, isn't slippery when wet, and doesn't get your hands cold at the end of the season. Wood is good.

Great feedback, Dale! Thanks.

The 40-inch wheel I currently have has the suede covering you described. It's nice (a bit weathered) but the wheel is just too big for the boat.

Let me know if you put your stainless wheel up for sale. (Not sure it's practical to ship something that size, but if it is, I'd be interested.)

Thanks again,
Sean

Sean,

The wheel I would be getting rid of is the 32" with the suede wrap, that is as soon as I know the repair on the 32" teak rim wheel is up to the job.  It  is in very nice condition.  Shipping is not an issue as it weighs very little and meets the UPS requirements.

Give me a shout in a month and I will know more then. The boat is not in as of yet, as I lost my job and have been putting in overtime looking for another one.
