Title: Paragon transmission
Post by: Sta-Sea-Dawn on February 16, 2012, 08:59:28 AM
Teleflex cable unattached the transmission would shift by hand into forward and reverse but would not click into forward.  The shaft turned with the engine running. The new fluid was milky.

It worked (drive shaft turned) when I shifted it by hand.  The teleflex 64 series cable was not hooked up.

I changed the oil in the transmission 2 times trying to get it not to be milky in color with out running the engine.  I do not have any leaks.  But the last time, I left it dry for a week or more and kept vacuuming the bottom of the case to insure there was no fluid left in it.

Now, the new problem, yesterday I finally got my cable bracket holder and hooked the telflex 64 cable to the tranny.  I refilled the fluid with SAE 30.  I started the engine with great expectations........with the tranny closed up and cable attached the shifting arm moved but the drive shaft would not turn in forward or reverse......disillusioned...I do not believe that I messed with the tension nut to change the travel of the shifting arm in the tranny but I am going to look at that next maybe.

Question...could leaving the tranny dry for the 7 to 10 days have hurt the internal pressure plates some how?

Leaving it dry should have not hurt it. It sounds like you need to adjust it so it will snap in without the cable on it, then connect the cable. If it will not snap in with the cable you need to adjust the cable.

Another way to put it is get the cable out of the picture- take it off and get the tranny shifting first. Then install the cable. If it won't shift then you know you have a cable or linkage problem, not a tranny problem.

I drained and change the oil several times and left it dry for about 10 days to get all the old oil out of it.  I just kept vacuuming.  I did not run shift or adjust the tranny during this time.  I had not used the tranny or made adjustments to it since it worked.

I have no idea.....it was locked up tight.....but I had a friend help ...I stayed in the cockpit and worked the engine controls.  He just moved the shifter arm on the transmission back and forth with the tranny cover off.

It moved a 1/4 inch at first and after about a 20 shifts it just got looser and looser.  Now it shifts from the cockpit and even locks into forward indent.  It is not as smooth as I would like, but it works.  He had no idea of why it was locked up.
